Journal Description
Shidnij Svit (The World of the Orient) is a peer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to the advancement of Oriental studies in Ukraine and the international scholarly community. Established in 1927 and revived in 1993, the journal has a long-standing tradition of promoting high-quality research in the humanities, particularly in the fields of history, philology, philosophy, religious studies, and cultural studies related to the Orient. As the main periodical of the A. Yu. Krymskyi Institute of Oriental Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the journal serves as an authoritative platform for scholarly dialogue and academic exchange.
The journal is published quarterly in Ukrainian and English and welcomes contributions from both national and international researchers. Focus and Scope
Shidnij Svit (The World of the Orient) focuses on the comprehensive study of the history, languages, literatures, religions, philosophies, and cultures of the Eastern world. The journal publishes original research on ancient, medieval, and modern periods of the Orient, as well as studies on source materials, historiography, and documentary heritage. Special attention is given to interdisciplinary approaches that integrate historical, philological, philosophical, and cultural perspectives in the analysis of Eastern societies and traditions.
In addition, the journal emphasizes research on Ukraine’s historical, cultural, and intellectual connections with Eastern regions, including studies on Crimean history, Eastern diasporas, ethnic and religious minorities, and Oriental artifacts found in Ukraine. The scope also includes contemporary developments in Eastern societies, informational resources, art history, and the scholarly legacy of prominent Orientalists. By publishing translations of significant historical, religious, and literary texts and critical reviews, the journal aims to promote cross-cultural understanding and advance international cooperation in Oriental studies.
