Journal Description
Materials is an international, peer-reviewed, open-access journal dedicated to advancing research in materials science and engineering. Published semimonthly online by MDPI, the journal provides an interdisciplinary platform for researchers to communicate experimental and theoretical findings concerning the structure, properties, functions, and applications of materials. It welcomes original research contributions, reviews, spotlights, and short communications, covering research from fundamental scientific investigations to applied materials engineering.
The journal aims to promote an in-depth understanding of the relationships between the structure, properties, and functions of materials across different length scales. Its broad interdisciplinary character brings together research in materials science, materials engineering, condensed matter physics, nanoscience, and nanotechnology. Materials also publishes Special Issues on focused topics, providing opportunities for researchers to explore emerging developments and specialized areas within the materials research community.
Scope of the Journal
The scope of Materials encompasses research on a wide variety of materials, including ceramics, glasses, polymers, composites, semiconductors, magnetic materials, biological and biomimetic materials, silica, carbon materials, metals, alloys, and other functional materials ranging from the nanoscale to bulk materials. The journal considers studies addressing synthesis, structure, mechanical, chemical, electronic, magnetic, optical, and other properties of materials, as well as their applications. Areas such as coatings and films, pigments, ionic and covalent crystals, intermetallics, medical and dental implant materials, and other advanced functional materials are also included.
The journal further covers materials characterization and analytical techniques, including electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, calorimetry, nuclear microscopy and spectroscopy, laser technology, optical fibers, Rutherford backscattering, and neutron diffraction. Its scope also includes fundamental research in condensed matter and materials physics, continuum mechanics, statistics, mechanics of materials, tribology, solid-state physics, nanoscience, and nanotechnology. Through this broad scope, Materials supports interdisciplinary research aimed at improving the scientific understanding, engineering, characterization, and practical development of advanced materials.
