Scope of the Journal in History of Medicine
The journal covers a wide range of historical research related to the development of medicine across different periods and regions. It includes studies on ancient medical practices and theories from civilizations such as Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Indian, Chinese, and Greek, as well as research on medieval medicine in both the Islamic Golden Age and Europe. The journal also welcomes work on the Renaissance and Enlightenment periods, focusing on shifts in medical understanding, anatomical discoveries, and the emergence of modern science. Studies on modern medicine, from the 19th century to the present, are encouraged, especially those exploring major advances such as germ theory, antibiotics, and evidence-based practices.
In addition to chronological studies, the journal embraces thematic and topical research. This includes biographical accounts of influential medical figures, institutional histories of hospitals, medical schools, and other key establishments, and analyses of how epidemics like the Black Death, cholera, and influenza have shaped medical practices and public health. Articles examining the interaction between medicine and technology, particularly how innovations have transformed diagnosis and treatment, are also within the journal’s scope.
Furthermore, the journal considers the sociocultural dimensions of medicine, including the historical development of medical ethics, issues of human experimentation, consent, and bioethics. It also explores the role of medicine in warfare, the historical progression of public health movements, and the cross-cultural exchange and adaptation of medical knowledge. Overall, the journal provides a platform for diverse and interdisciplinary perspectives on the history of medicine.
